Have Fun in Scotland

Scotland is one of those places where you just know you are going to have fun. What is there not to like with its old castles, whisky distilleries and spooky lakes? It is also a great place for shopping and you can buy anything from a traditional kilt to Prada schoenen.

Which brings me to its crazier side – the Scots have never shied away from physical sports and activities and they love outdoor pursuits such as hunting and falconry. But then you get down to downright mad sports and pastimes such as tossing the caber.

For those of you not in the know, tossing the caber involves a bunch of kilted Scotsmen picking up huge bits of wood and throwing them as far as they can. While most of us would guess that it is just brute force involved, I am sure that the athletes themselves would argue that it is a game of skill and precision.

This is just one of the sports practised in the Scottish Highland Games. Others include the Scottish Hammer throw, the weight throw and the stone put.

Then there is the Sheaf Toss which involves throwing a bag of straw! Sounds crazy to most of us but it is in fact a series of serious athletic trials which sort the men from the boys.
